Leadership

Muizenberg High School: RCL Conference

All South African high school has a Representative Council of Learners (RCL) consisting of three learners of each grade, elected by the members of the grade. On 4 February 2012 Muizenberg High School hosted RCL members from various schools in the city for a conference.
Bright and early our student leadership body arrived at the school to welcome the hosts of the conference and also the school catering club who prepared wonderful meals and snacks as well as goodie bags for the guests and were on their feet all day, cooking, helping, dishing and serving all under the watchful eye of our consumer studies teacher, Ms September.
The RCL members that attended were treated to a variety of workshops in groups, meeting other school leaders at the same time, which included: community projects, how to be a leader and living hope. At the end of the day, certificates were awarded to these RCL members for attending the workshop.
“It was a privilege and an honour. It also challenged me as a leader and taught me much” said Keegan Williams, the chairperson of the school’s RCL.
Many teaching staff and student leaders went through much trouble to organise, host and feed representatives from schools across the city. Once again, Muizenberg High School was actively involved in a community project that affected not only our community, but also those of the other schools that attended.

CIRCLES OF EXCELLENCE WORKSHOP AT MUIZENBERG HIGH!

Grade 12 leaders who made themselves available to serve in the Circles of Excellence  leadership positions to help drive initiatives, programs and existing efforts in the different spheres of school life were trained by Lisa Pedersen from Changing Hearts and Minds.

They had to learn about teamwork, how to support and get the student body to be part of the initiatvies and then Mrs. September took them through the vital steps of project management.

Being part of the bigger picture and to support each other was important to get a good result!

Putting posters together to present each Circle to the other groups were great fun!

EVERY MONTH HAS A THEME TO LIVE BY.

We have decided to make posters about every theme.  We get together and  create the messages which we put on the notice boards and walls.  This is great for teamwork and the posters are very effective.

JANUARY - HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES

We want to encourage the school to do exercises and to eat healthy.  We also want everyone to know they have a choice about  how they live.

We learn in Life Orientation (Physical Education) and in Life Sciences how bad lifestyle choices can effect our heart and our body.

We as teenagers eat a lot of fast foods and we complain a lot about our weight.

FEBRUARY - CARE AND COMPASSION

We used the wording that came from the UK: KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON to encourage our students to have respect for each other.

Ubuntu is a very well known word in South Africa to say that I am only the person I am through you.

Students love the happy pictures and colours and we want everyone to feel that they belong to our school family, that they are cared for .

We all agreed that it is also important to give the message of thankfulness - Tacksam in Swedish

To love is to care.
