OPEN HANDS AND HEARTS ENCOURAGE READING!
Congleton High School did a book drive at the end of 2012 which resulted in a generous gift of 49 boxes of fiction and non-fiction books, which they sent off to South Africa by ship.  It arrived on December 16 at the Cape Town Harbour, but because of bad weather and public holidays it could only be released on December 28.
Melissa (MHS) and Maureen (MJS) had an exciting time choosing books for their libraries.
After the books were sorted and  Muizenberg High  and Muizenberg Junior schools accepted some of the books to their libraries, the rest of the gift will now be distributed to various charities and schools across the peninsula.

Combined with the books, Muizenberg High had a food ,clothing and toy drive which will be added to the donation.

On Friday we set off to Masiphumelele to distribute books, toys , clothes and stationery to two organisations (Masakhane Creche and Hokisa - Home for Kids in Africa) and Ukhanyo Primary School.

Our first stop was at Masakhane Creche and we were welcomed by Zanele Bontshi, Lynne Lamb and
Melissa Tiemie.

Masakhane is one of 20 projects run by an organisation called Valley Development.  This Educare centre was a gift in honour of Mr. Mandela's 85th birthday and it was opened by Archbishop Tutu.

The Rotary clubs all over the world, also Sweden and the UK donated funds to built the centre.

The classes are full of happy children who love books and toys.

It was a wonderful feeling to make a difference in the month of CARE and COMPASSION, and we will visit Masakhane again!!

HOKISA - OUR SECOND STOP....

After Masakhane we stopped at Hokisa Home for Kids in Africa.  We were met by various staff (Mandisa Mahlumba; Eunice Mbanjwa; Simphiwe Nkomombini; Lutz van Dijk) who welcomed the gifts!

The children were all at school, but we know that they will love the books and gifts.  Many of the children go to the local high school in Masiphumele and the teachers encourage them to improve their reading skills.  Dr. Van Dijk invited us back to spend time with the children in the afternoons.

OUR LAST STOP - UKHANYO PRIMARY SCHOOL - MASIPHUMELELE

We were met by the principal, Mr. Michael Tyli. He told us more about his school. The school is from Grade R to Grade 7. It has 1437 students and 35 staff members.

Deputy Principal

Subject: Donation of Books and Purity baby food

Dear Leoni Jacobsen

Thank you very much for the books and purity baby food which you have kindly donated to the Organisation’s Early Learning Programme. The books will be used at Masakhane Educare.

The Purity baby food will be given to the babies in the projects Family and Community Motivation (FCM), which takes learning into the houses of young underprivileged children whose parents cannot afford to send their children to the local crèches’.

Under the auspices of Valley Development Projects, the project does good work in the community and it is largely through donors, like you, that we are truly able to make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

We appreciate your kindness.

Warm Regards

  1. I've enjoyed seeing the pictures of and reading about our books' long journey. Glad to see they have all found good homes! Thank you to all at Muizenberg High who helped unpack, sort and distribute and especially to Mrs Jacobsen for for co-ordinating the distribution and arranging to add in the toys and baby food to make this a really worthwhile gift. Thanks must also go to Mr Franklin at Congleton High who organised the whole project and arranged shipment to SA and to Mrs Parker, our school librarian who packed and wrapped all 49 boxes!
