British Council Project - Exploring Culture through Food - Survey results from Congleton High

Traditional Food
How often do students eat traditional food at home?
·       20% of students questioned eat traditional British food regularly.
·       80% eat it sometimes.
Students’ favourite traditional meals include:
Fish and Chips, Sunday ‘Roast’ (meat, potatoes, vegetables),
‘English breakfast’ (bacon, eggs, sausages, beans, mushrooms, tomato, toast), Shepherd’s pie (minced meat & gravy, topped with mashed potato),
‘Toad in the hole’ (Yorkshire pudding with sausage and gravy), and Steak pudding.
Food from other cultures
·       95% of students regularly eat food from other cultures at home.
The most popular foods from other cultures are:
·       Indian  (70%)
·       Italian (pasta, spaghetti, etc) (60%)
·       Others include Chinese (45%), Mexican (Chilli etc) (40%), Thai (15%), Spanish, Japanese, French, Turkish, American and Cypriot.
Fast food
How often do students eat fast food?
·       5% regularly eat fast food.
·       85% sometimes eat fast food.
·       10% never eat fast food.
Do students prefer fast food, traditional or food from other cultures?
·       50% prefer fast food.
·       20% prefer traditional food.
·       25% prefer food from other cultures
·       5% like fast food and food from other cultures equally.
Is fast food more popular now than traditional food?
·       80% believe it is.
The main reasons students think fast food is more popular include:
·       It’s quick and easy
·       There are lots of fast food outlets.
·       It’s cheaper.
·       Fast food is advertised a lot.
·       It tastes better.
